Hello Travelers!!

I want to wish you all an AMAZING 2020, full of travels. Hopefully “the travel” being to our country!

As the New Year starts, we, Dominicans, come across certain beliefs that we strongly support and follow while others ¨mostly the youngsters¨ do not anymore. Some of these kabbalahs are topics for hilarious discussions in family gatherings during the holidays.

I hope you get to enjoy them as much as we do. Here´s our top 10!

  1. Kabbalahs – Specific Clothing on New Year

Kabbalahs

Wearing New Clothes for The Year´s Eve (South Area). Wearing Yellow on January 1st (North Area). Wearing red underwear (different areas of the country) is the required thing for helping to bring good energy or vibes to prosper you in business, love and the like.

  1. Kabbalahs – Eating 12 Grapes at Midnight While Going Upstairs 12 Steps as Well

Kabbalahs

Continuing with New Year´s beliefs (South-East coast), the practice of shoveling 12 grapes as you ascend 12 steps in your stairway during the 12 ¨bangs¨ of the New Year announcement. Also is seen as prosperity in your life throughout the year. However, it is so hard to move past the 6th one that it becomes a marathon among family members to accomplish the task.

  1. Kabbalahs – The weather During the First 12 Days of the Year

Kabbalahs

The weather plays a vital role in the forecast of agriculture for Dominican farmers. It is believed (and sure expected) that the climate of the first 12 days of January, called “Cabañuelas,” will represent (to our farmers) the rainfall to expect during each month of the year. Not everyone can interpret a Cabañuela since they have a special “algorithm” of hours of the day and night, which will also define the specific days of the month to interpret. That way, our farmers prepare for the months of poor or no rain.

  1. Kabbalahs – Walking With a Suitcase Around the Block After Midnight of New Year’s Eve

Kabbalahs

Another belief is to walk around the block or receive a New Year with a suitcase, to promote a lot of trips in the year to come.  If you want to go to a specific place, you better fill the baggage with the particular items that you should need there.

  1. Kabbalahs – Burning Incense or White Candle on New Year’s Eve

Kabbalahs

Many people burn a white candle or incense in order to cleanse their homes and personal auras of bad vibrations y bring good harmony.

  1. Kabbalahs – Doing Deep Cleaning and Throwing Away Old Things of the House Before New Year’s Eve

Kabbalahs

One of the traditions that I like the most is when we do a deep cleaning of the house and throw away (or give away) all the old things, to make “space” for many new and great things to come in the next year.

  1. Kabbalahs – Not Cleaning on January 1ST

Kabbalahs

I am not very fond of this one, especially after a big party the previous night (and I have my suspicions that our grandma’s invented this one, to have a day of relaxing). Still, many Dominicans of the Cibao area, don’t clean their homes on January 1st, as they think it will “wash away” the good fortune and luck that New Year is bringing.

  1. Kabbalahs – Making a List of the Bad Things That Happened in the Finishing Year

Kabbalahs

Many Dominicans make a list of the bad things that happened in the year and burn it to finish the cycle or prevent them from happening in the year to come.

  1. Kabbalahs – Making a List of the Next Year Resolutions

Puerto Plata - Mega Adventures

Some Dominicans make a list of the GOOD THINGS they want for the year. They save it on a box and bury it to help those things to happen. Many people look for that box on the next New Year’s Eve and check out which had come true!

  1. Kabbalahs – Taking a “Leaves Bath.”

Puerto Plata - Mega Adventures

Some people tend to take a bath full of different leaves (each leave brings a different meaning, to cleanse their auras from bad energy.

These are just some of the many things we still go through with our grand and great-grandparents, who received all this knowledge from their ancestors and are in charge of passing on to us those traditions. Remember, we are a mix of indigenous, Africans, French, and Spanish descendants. This makes our culture the most awesome one you can find around the islands.

Hello Travelers!!

Firstly, today, I am writing this blog with a fantastic view of Sosúa bay. A must place to visit when traveling to Puerto Plata: clear blue waters, yellow sand, and one of the best deep-fried fish and piña Colada! You can check some of our previous blogs, with suggestions about beaches, food, or drinks to try while traveling here!

Christmas is in the air! December has arrived with its shorter and fresher-cooler days (yes, we Dominicans sometimes even wear sweaters!).

This time, I would like to share with you some of the top 10 Dominican Christmas traditions, hope you can enjoy some of them with us, welcome to the Dominican Republic traditions!

Dominican Christmas – Christmas Dinner

Christmas Traditions

This time of the year, the most crucial night is Christmas eve (December 24th), when most of the Dominican Families get together to enjoy a family dinner.

The Christmas dinner menu tends to be always the same one: MORO (Rice with black beans), roasted pork, Pasteles en Hoja (and kind of plantain pie filled with meat and raisings, covered in a plantain leave), Potato salad, gummy fruits, apples, grapes and Ponche (rum cream drink) also a traditional drink for these days.

Dominican Christmas (Chritsmas Carols – Dominican Way)

Christmas Traditions

Dominicans are known for their joy and inner music. So at Christmas time, we love to let it flow!  With the AGUINALDOS people, kids and friends tend to go to homes and play instruments and sing Christmas carol songs at the home’s doors.

The homeowners tend to invite them to hot tea, chocolate, or some Christmas candies to eat.  Some street kids also tend to do it for a tip.

Another way of carols is the MAÑANITAS, which used to be also people signing songs, but lately is more a music truck playing Christmas songs between 2-5 AM to wake you up with Christmas melodies.

Dominican Christmas – Home and Neighborhood Décor

Christmas decorations

Dominican love to decorate with ornaments! We love it that much, that generally people start decorating their homes in early November, and leave all decors until the end of January.

Also, neighbors get together and decorate their neighborhood streets. Sometimes there is even some competition trying to see which neighborhood has the best décor in town.

Angelito / Diablito ( Secret Angel Gifts Game)

christmas gifts

This is one of the traditions that I personally enjoy the most. Even though having our 13th salary bonus (yes, Laboral law make all Dominicans to receive a 13th salary in December). We love gifts so much, that sometimes there is no way to give something to everyone, so an excellent way to exchange presents with friends, family and/or co-workers is playing ANGELITO (Secret angel).

The game consists of creating a list of names of the people playing, each one takes one name, and you give a present to that person you got in your paper.

A funnier version of the game is adding the DIABLITO (Devilish Secret angel). It is basically the same as above adding more days of playing, the few firsts days, you give your secret friend some JOKE gifts (for example, in one occasion my secret angel was someone with a new meat distribution company, and I gave him a Live chick, as my “initial investment” to the business).

After several days playing Jokes, you give your official ANGELITO gift, and is when you get to discover who was the one playing jokes at you!

Misa del Gallo

Dominican Republic

For Catholic devotes, the religion of the majorities in DR,  people tend to go to the MISA DEL GALLO, a special Mass done at 12AM on the 25th, to celebrate the birth of Baby Jesus.

Christmas Gifts for Kids

Basked gifts

Dominican kids, depending of the area of the country, receive unique gifts by  different magical friends: Baby Jesus (December 25th),  Santa Claus (December 25th), Magic Kings (January 6th) and not much used lately, but sometimes also Vieja Belen (January 21st.,  which is also the same day we celebrate the Virgen de la Altagracia day).

There is also a beauty tradition of many families, companies, public and private organizations that recollect kids’ gifts and bring them to the less fortunate neighborhoods in town.   Other groups bring presents on Christmas day to the kids that are in the hospitals.

Dominican Christmas – Seasonal Fruits and Candy Street Stands

Candy Street Stands

As Dominicans tends to eat grapes, apples, mandarins, sweet gummies, and many dry nuts, a lot of people place some street stands to sell those goods, and once you start seeing them, is when you say Christmas has begun!!

Roasted Pork Street Stands

Roasted pork

Yes, it is not Christmas if you don’t eat Roasted pork. (It is like Turkey for Americans in their thanksgiving day). Our roasted pork take HOURS to be ready, so you’ll see a lot of people cooking their porks, and you can go and get it ready to eat and buy it by pieces or pounds.

Business and Social Christmas Parties and Dinners

christmas party

The majority of the big companies prepare a big party and/or Dinner for all of their employees. A way to show their appreciation for their hard work. In those dinner/ parties, the menu tends to be the Christmas dinner menu. And the companies tend to raffle many great gifts for their employees.

Many groups of friends get together to celebrate Christmas too. So we end up having a full agenda of events with almost a celebration every day of the month.  Definitely not a month to be on a diet (lousy joke, hahaha).

Christmas Basket Gifts

Christmas decorations

Another unique tradition is to give a Christmas basket as a gift; those baskets tend to have many of the goods that Dominican eat or drink on their Christmas day.

Many companies sometimes decide not to do a party, but to help with their employees’ Christmas dinner by offering this kind of gift. Mandatory items in these baskets are some traditional gummy candies, some apples and grapes, some classic Christmas cake or panettone, and of course, any alcoholic drinks like Rum, Ponche, Wine, Cider or Champagne.

As you can see above, for Dominicans Christmas = Share and joy! So we hope you can share some of our warm heartful traditions with us and can take home great memories of the way we celebrate it.

Don’t stay in your hotel, go out and take some pictures of the Christmas details listed above, how many can you find?

Films – Top 10 Shot in Puerto Plata

Hello Travelers!

Firstly, once again we are here to provide you with valuable information that will make your stay amazing experience in our province. City tours were never better, with us you can create of your experience a personal rally in which you will get to discover so much more than you were in for before booking your vacations at our unique destination.

Secondly, this time, we bring you a bit of Hollywood and Independent Films Productions to snoop into while walking around town.

Puerto Plata has been the scenario of so many interesting films and productions. Come along and reproduce some of these movies’ scenes for yourself and recreate that special moment while this time the protagonist is you!

1. Puerto Plata Films – Jurassic Park

Puerto Plata films

In 1993 Steven Spielberg filmed Jurassic Park, this 1st movie of the series won 3 Oscar Awards. Some of its scenes took place in our beautiful Dominican Republic and most importantly, in our town, Puerto Plata. Unquestionably, one of the most popular films.

“The Ambar Museum” located at 12 de Julio St., No. 24 (Close now due to renovations), had the iconic Amber fossil with mosquito that is presented at the very beginning of the movie. To cOver fifteen percent of the film was shot in Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic, both at the Amber Museum and Isabel de Torres Mountain.

2. Puerto Plata Films – Love Wrecked

The movie is about a young girl (Amanda Bytes) who is suddenly alone at a tropical island with the top musical idol of the moment. By the way, many of my friends were part of the “crow”of the movie.

About 80% of this movie was filmed in 2004 at the former Sun Village Resort & Spa in Cofresí, Puerto Plata, currently Cofresi Palm Beach & Resort.

This film directed by:

  • Randal Kleiser (“Grease”).
  • Written by Stephen Langford (“Just Deal”).
  • Starring Amanda Bytes (“What a Girl Wants”).
  • Chris Carmack (“The O.C.”).
  • Jonathan Bennett (“Mean Girls”).
  • Jaime-Lynn DiScala (“The Sopranos”).
  • Fred Willard (“Monster House”).
  • Kathy Griffin (“My Life On The D List”).
  • Lance Bass (“On The Line”).

3. Puerto Plata Films – Cabarete

Cabarete

An exciting drama about a teenage kite surfer from the Dominican Republic that sets out to compete professionally in the coastal town of Cabarete, but soon gets caught up in an endless stream of hard partying that attempts to get the best of him.

This movie directed by Ivan Bordas Butler and Starrred by Stéphane FreissLucie DebayRamón Emilio Candelariowas filmed at Cabarete beach.

4. Noa Noa

noa noa

Not all movies filmed at our Puerto Plata beaches are so recent, we also have a 1974 movie, directed by Ugo Liberatore and starred by Mariana CamaraDiogenes CastilloGianfranco De Grassi.

The Plot is about British survivors of the mutiny on the H.M.S. Bounty plus some Polynesian men and women from Tahiti are stranded on a Pacific island of Pitcairn. Soon strife, racial tension and bloody violence erupt. British survivors desire Polysenian women and this is the main reason of bloodshed on Pitcairn.

5. Puerto Plata Films – Traumhotel

This one is not a continuous series with consistent story continuity, but a number of essentially independent stories, ‘Love Boat without the cruise ship’.

Each episode is set in a different exotic holiday destination, interweaving the adventures of local inhabitants and hotel staff and some of the hotel guests, whose problems usually root at home in Europe, with ample images of the local nature, traditions, monuments, wildlife etcetera.

(Note taken from KGF Vissers). This 2004 filmed, produced by Lisa Films, took place in different towns of our country, but contains scenes taken in Puerto Plata, at the local public market, the Amber Museum street corner and at one of the VIP Areas of Lifestyle Holidays Vacation Resort.

6. Where Is Puerto Plata?

In New York City a local surfer finds himself on a long and frustrating weekend commute to get to the local beach break, only to be let down by the comical lack of surf.

Meanwhile another surfer (Played by Tyler Breuer, co-founder of the NYSFF) and his girlfriend take a flight to Puerto Plata in the Dominican Republic to get away from the city life. They find rest, relaxation, waves, and even a little romance.—Gareth Cox

This is a 2009 New York Surf Films Festival sponsored by Jet Blue and The Dominican Republic. Written and directed by Jeremy Dean, Director of photography Gareth Paul Cox, original music recorded on the Frontier by Jeremy SH Griffith, staring: Donna Masri, Tyler Breuer, Shane Batty and Dan Gregor.

7. Un 4to de Josué or a 4th of Joshua

Puerto Plata - Mega Adventures

Filmed in 2018 Josué, an eccentric high-school boy, sets out to win the heart of his classmate Martina before graduation. Director:  Gabriel Valencia. Writer:  Dulcita Lieggi Stars:  Ivan AybarCriestela GómezJeyson Gómez. It shows scenes taken at Pico Isabel de Torres, Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic.

8. Puerto Plata Films – Hay Un País En El Mundo

Hello Travelers!!

October brings with it a lot of rainy days to Puerto Plata, it welcomes our Autumn Season and some of our local festivities, as is the Jazz Festival of Puerto Plata.

Before continuing, remember to go through our previous post about the top 10 Puerto Plata spots chosen by Juan Luis Guerra

Firstly, a little bit of history of how Jazz got to be included in our culture. Believe it or not it was a result, and obviously a positive one, of the presence of the US armed forces in the DR during World War I.

At first, it was frowned upon by some of our local musicians since its rhythm was opposite to our traditional music and it didn’t invite dancing as well as our so popular merengue and bachata do.

Secondly, despite the disagreements and in contrast of how Jazz in those days was also rejected in the US itself since it is an Afro American Rhythm it started to gain its place in our dance floors. Many years later the Jazz fans in the country have developed a platform to enjoy, create and celebrate this amazing rhythm.

Here the best Jazz Music Stops for you to enjoy a good bite and a drink while listening to our best Jazz performers in town.

  1. Casa 40, Puerto Plata:

Jazz Music Stops

One of our great jazz music stops. Located on Duarte St. No. 40, cornering with Imbert St., on the Historical Center of Puerto Plata City. Casa 40 presents Roberto Santana, live on Thursday nights as of 8:00PM.

So, Roberto de Jesús Santana Carbajal. Born in Puerto Plata on February 21, 1990, a young and talented performer, moved by the influence of his father, a Jazz performer himself.

Roberto started learning to play the piano at 3 years of age with his dad. Then at 10 continued learning music by learning to play the clarinet; this time, with Professor José de Peña at the local Bellas Artes Institute.

At 16 got his first saxophone, which he learned to play with performers Carlos Estrada and Sandy Gabriel (Renowned DR Jazz performer). However, he states he is still learning since music is infinite, always new.

“Playing Jazz is like flying in the skies and traveling wherever you want”, states Santana, “It is the music of musicians, in which you express feelings and thoughts, enjoying every note and melody”, he continues.

  1. Lifestyle Holidays Vacation Club & Resort (LHVC)

Puerto Plata Dominican Republic

Hello Travelers!!

Firstly, September has started with really high temperatures, which invites you to take a refreshing splash in the pool and the beach.

Secondly, i was sitting under a shade umbrella at Sosua Beach and received several WhatsApp messages with a video Clip.  It was the new Juan Luis Guerra’s LAMPARA PA MIS PIES video clip that is becoming viral! before continuing, remember to go through our previous post about the street murals of Puerto Plata.

His wife inspired this romantic song, and it declares that she is the light of his life, and she provides light wherever he walks. Therefore she is LAMPARA PA MIS PIES (Lamp to my feet). The music, lyrics, and rhythm are as touching as all Juan Luis’ creations, full of joy and color!

But what gave me the goosebumps, and covered me with pride was to discover the fantastic sightseeing tour that Juan Luis Guerra is hosting from Puerto Plata Dominican Republic in his clip!

Turn up the volume, and follow Juan Luis Guerra to discover the amazing Puerto Plata!

What about having pictures or sharing videos dancing his new merengue in those same locations?

Puerto Plata Dominican Republic – Parque Central

Puerto Plata Dominican Republic

The video starts with an aerial shot of the Parque Central of Puerto Plata and its Glorieta. It is showing the splendor and colorful townhouses of the Colonial Area of Puerto Plata.

I dare you to take a beautiful picture showing Glorieta, Church, and park altogether. What do you think?

Puerto Plata Dominican Republic – Catedral San Felipe Apóstol

Puerto Plata Dominican Republic

Also, the aerial shoot is showing our most significant church in town:  San Felipe Cathedral, modern victorian style architecture.

Bergantin

Puerto Plata Dominican Republic

Many of the video clips’ dancing shots are in front of Bergantin Restaurant (a great place to eat seafood in town) showing the splendor of modern victorian style home. Come on in, and let me know about your favorite drink!

Casita Azul

Puerto Plata Dominican Republic

Also, Casita Azul.  Another fantastic restaurant located in front of Parque Central.   It is also one of the protagonist’s buildings to show our Victorian architecture. You can read more about these architectural styles in my previous blog of Victorian buildings in Puerto Plata). Get in and let me know which one is your favorite dish!]

Long Beach Area And Street Murals

Puerto Plata Dominican Republic

Long Beach was one of the essential public beaches in the 1900s. This place had the first beachfront hotel that existed in Puerto Plata. However, some of its walls behold the most prominent Street mural displays in town (you can read more about Street mural in Puerto Plata in one of my previous blogs). I dare you to take a picture of you in front of your favorite one!!

Malecon

Puerto Plata Dominican Republic

The truck carrying Juan Luis around, mostly ride on our most crucial avenue: THE MALECON.   It is our longest and prettiest oceanfront drive with many restaurants, bars, beach area, and the preferred outdoors scenario for the exercise lovers! Who fancies making a carpooling video singing LAMPARA PA MIS PIES while driving on the MALECON?

Puerto Plata Dominican Republic – Teleférico

Puerto Plata Dominican Republic

Juan Luis and his musicians also visit our most emblematic place: the Teleférico. The cable car in which you ride up to the Isabel de Torres Mountain to discover the beauty of our flora and fauna along with breathtaking views of Puerto Plata City.   Great pictures hanging from the cable car or holding Jesus Redentor is mandatory in our social media.

Estación De Bomberos

Puerto Plata Dominican Republic

Our firefighter’s building station located at the Malecon also is one of the primary locations where this video was shooted.   Anyone fancy following the girl’s choreography while dancing just in front of that same spot?

La Puntilla

Puerto Plata Dominican Republic

Another great place. One of the preferred outdoor entertaining places by locals, where we can always have some “Aire Acondicioplado” (Blown AirCon). It also beholds the first Colonial Fort built in Christopher Colombus’ times and a fantastic view of the nautical Port.

Puerto Plata Dominican Republic – Anfiteatro

Puerto Plata Dominican Republic

Now I can say that Juan Luis Guerra played at our ANFITEATRO!  The amphitheater was one of the chosen locations for his clip.  Not only a huge symbolic place for music but also shows part of our ocean view and refreshing wind that accompanies all of our concerts there.  It has an excellent acoustic and is a magical place to receive Juan Luis Guerra.

La puntilla is another MUST place to visit in Puerto Plata. Check my events list below to see if you can join any concert while visiting town!

So, how was your city tour? Please leave your comments and share it with your friends!  I am just heading to the MALECON to drink some Coconut water while enjoying LAMPARA PA MIS PIES!

Hello Travelers!

Firstly, August has arrived with amazing hot sunny days. Enjoy it wisely, keep hydrated, and make sure to go out and enjoy the many offers that our town has for you! (if you want more clues, check out our past blogs).

Secondly, One of the things I most enjoy when traveling is to see Street art, Street Murals are awesome. Murals provide a beautiful display in places that otherwise would have been an empty and dirty wall. Remember to check out our previous post, Places for kids in Puerto Plata.

I also think you can discover a lot of “inner culture” by trying to understand the local art.

Puerto Plata has certainly taken the attention of many Dominican artists, who decided to give their work to our community. Artists by themselves, private groups and companies, and community organizations are doing their efforts by providing their economic and “hand-painting” cooperation to increase those murals.

Street Mural Campaigns

Street Murals

A group called “Yo AMO RD” started this mural campaign called “Muralizando RD.” As per their own terms: It is an initiative of moral art (making Street Murals), to capture murals throughout the National territory that arouses the consciousness of Dominicans.

“We rely on the creativity of the most talented artists, to promote artistic and cultural values of the Dominican essence, revitalizing common spaces and making them functional places dedicated to art. Above all, that can positively affect the environment and change the perception of the passer-by and the Dominican Republic’s face.”

“Muralizando RD” creates illustrations that seek to connect all citizens, with our history, traditions, and values to strengthen the power of the Dominican.

Today i invite you to join me on a scavenger hunt in search of MY favorite murals around the city. Don’t worry, if you don’t get to find them all, or don’t feel like playing, i will write down the exact location at the end of the blog. After that, I dare you to write a comment with other Murals in town that you prefer the most, apart from my list. So, let’s start.

Doña Patria by Omar Garcia aka Angurria

Street Murals

One of the most famous street murals, Doña Patria. Scavenger hunt hint:  This wall is full of Dominican Cigar smoke.

The painter is originally from Santo Domingo. With his Advertising career at APEC that made him start his work in plastic arts and graphic designer.

The mural is a tribute to the Dominican women influenced by his mother’s business a Beauty center. (It is a common habit for Dominicans to go once per week to the beauty parlor. In there we not only embellish the hair but it works as a social gathering and interaction, you can learn a lot of what is happening around town inside the beauty centers).

Street Murals – “Acordeón”  by Kilia Llano

Street Murals

Another of our great Street Murals, Acordeón. Scavenger hunt hint:  Driving from oceanic avenue towards the university, where you can always buy fresh coconut water.

Kilia is a Fine Artist, muralist, illustrator and art teacher, who was born in Santo Domingo.

From my interpretation, i defined it as a tribute to the Typical Merengue, that is one of its main instrument is the accordion.

“DAMAS” (I was not able to confirm the name)  by Alberto Khoury

Street Murals

Damas, certainly a beautiful one. Scavenger hunt hint:  in front of the “skin “clinic”.

This artist was born in Puerto Plata. He was an active worker in the community to promote the fine arts, ceramics, and Puerto Plata’s Carnival.

From my interpretation, this mural is a tribute to society ladies in Puerto Plata in the earlier 1900s.

Street Murals – “Homenaje a Severino” By Willy Gomez.

Street Murals

Homenaje a Severino, another very interesting work of art. Scavenger hunt hint:  This Wall embraces one of the most crucial university in town. Moreover, the painter is originally from Santo Domingo. He majored in Art Direction and Illustration from Altos de Chavon School of design.

The Mural is a tribute to one of the most prominent painters in DR called Severino. Gómez tried to focus on Severino’s painting style, adding glimpses of his style.

“Patrimonio” (I was not able to confirm the name) by Juan Miguel Ruiz aka Memo

Street Murals

Patrimonio, another great street art. Scavenger hunt hint: At the beginning of the oceanic drive, use to be a famous beach back in the 60’s. Memo is originally from Los Alcarrizos, Santo Domingo. Autodidact artist.

In additi0n, the mural represents the touristic patrimonial in town: Teleférico, and aquatic activities. (Must things to do while in Puerto Plata).

“Madre” (I was not able to confirm name) by Wady Ortega

Street Murals

Scavenger hunt hint: located in front of one of the above’s murals. This painter is originally from Puerto Plata.

From my interpretation, it certainly shows our Isabel de Torres mountain as a background. And the main character, Mother Nature  enjoying Puerto Plata’s bright sun while her hair becomes the waves of our beaches.

“Reina del Atlántico” (I was not able to confirm name) by Juan Villaman

Street Murals

Scavenger hunt hint: This Wall embraces one of the most crucial university in town.

The painter is native from Puerto Plata and got his artistic education at CHAVON Art school.  He is now living in Germany.

This mural shows Christopher Colombus’ arrival to the America’s. The first arrival was to La Isabela, Puerto Plata (by the way, another MUST place to visit).

Street Murals – Recicla Por Natura by Lidisset Reyes

Street Murals

Scavenger hunt hint: Historical area in town, on the Street that crosses from Casa 40 to Pachuche (by the way, those are two great places to visit).

The painter is originally from Puerto Plata. With formal studies in Advertising, Cinematography, Graphic Design, Muralist and Visual Artist.

This Mural represents the conjunction of Mother Nature (Pachamama goddess) and humans protecting each other. And also reinforce the need for recycling to protect nature.

Street Murals – “Esperanza”  by Prolactar

Street Murals

Similarly to the previous ones, this one is a great Street Mural, quite artistic. Scavenger hunt hint: its walls embrace one the children educational organizations in town.

The mural was done in a combination of Prolactar (design) and the school organization (It’s execution. The art includes all the stages of the child, from the conception, birth, breastfeeding, education until grown-up. This mural goal is to promote breastfeeding as the best option for babies and also promote education based on high values, all together to help the kid’s development.

Those are my ten favorite ones. I hope you get to find them with my hints. If you wish, you can also help the organizations doing this MEGA labor. Either economical or just bringing a warm painting hand. Links to those organizations are listed below, along with the actual addresses of them, in case you were not able to follow my hints.

In conclusion, Keep enjoying my beautiful town!!

Places For Kids

Hello Travelers!

Firstly, this July has arrived with the house full of kids. Yeah! It is summer vacation time here in DR!

Secondly, for me, this is the season to enjoy family, beach, pool, river, summer camps and the challenge to seek more activities to keep our little ones entertained away from the home TV. If you are Dominican, surely you enjoy good Dominican desserts. In that case, don’t forget to go through our previous post.

So if you are traveling with your small ones, once pool and beach time is over, here are some places for kids that for us, as a mother, and for my kids and their friends, are the best places to go to in Puerto Plata, where kids can have fun, while parents can sit and relax a little bit.

Above all, don’t stay put at your hotel room, come out and let your children enjoy and learn some of the Dominican Culture by playing with other kids!

Places For Kids – Ocean World

Places For Kids

One of my kids favorite. You not only get the chance to see shows and interact with dolphins, sharks, sea lions, stingrays, birds, etc. But you also have the opportunity to snorkel in a big aquarium and play at the waterslides aqua park.

Places For Kids – Ocean Village

Places For Kids

Another great place that has different pool areas, with waterslides and aqua park. Fishing area and playground area. You will have your kids entertained for an entire day.

Places For Kids – Fun City

Places For Kids

Fun City, different kinds of Karts for all levels.  Also, the playground area.

Places For Kids – Green Jack Restaurant

Places For Kids

PlayGround area for kids, plus beach area, tennis, basketball, and soccer courts.

Game Pro at Puerto Plata Golf Club

Places For Kids

Play Station and Xboxes available on a secured closed area.  Also the chance to take classes at the Potting Green or Driving Range.

La Catalina Restaurant

Places For Kids

This is a restaurant, however, it’s a playground area for kids, plus different kinds of birds, monkeys, and animals to enjoy.

Plaza Galerías

Places For Kids

Playground area for kids, plus plenty of space where kids could ride their strollers, skates, and hoover boards.

Virtual Room POP

Places For Kids

Virtual Games for all ages and tastes. Located inside Playa Dorada Plaza.

Parque Central

Places For Kids

My kids love going to the main plaza of town, which we called “Central Park” because it is full of birds and Doves.  They enjoy feeding them up with the corn they have for sale. Also, it is a wide-open space for them to bring their strollers, skates, and hoover boards.

POP Cinemas (Inside Playa Dorada Plaza)Places For Kids

Also a great place for kids. Pop Cinemas provides kids with movies and cartoons every week.

I hope this blog can help you out on planning your days with your kids while vacationing in Puerto Plata.

Remember: when traveling with your kids, the best you can do to keep them safe is to make them wash their hands several times per day, use sunblock, use mosquitoes repellent, and keep them hydrated. With that, they are ready to ENJOY A GREAT VACATION!!

Dominican Desserts – Top 10 In Puerto Plata

Hello Travelers!

Before you begin, in case you are a fan of culture and architecture, do not forget to take a look at our previous post about the Victorian Buildings located in Puerto Plata.

Firstly, i hope you were able to enjoy many of the events we had last May in Puerto Plata. For Dominican kids, June is the beginning of summer vacations. Time to enjoy hanging out with the block friends, riding bikes, summer camps, and why not? Going out with the family for, preferably, a sweet treat!

Secondly, on some of my previous blogs, I listed the Top 10 best dishes to taste, and the Top 10 best drinks to try (go on and check them out), and for me, there is no complete meal without dessert. So, if you are a sugar lover, here are (to our taste) the top 10 Dominican desserts to try while visiting Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic. As there is no dieting while on vacation, let your sugar route begin!

Dominican Desserts – Helado De Uva De Playa

Dominican Desserts

One of our great Dominican desserts. This ice cream is a must when visiting Puerto Plata. Many Dominicans from out of town come here looking for this seasonal ice cream flavor. , you would be able to find it at Heladería Mariposa located in front of Central Park.

Dominican Desserts – Galletas Julia

Dominican Desserts

This generational homemade cookie is sold at their family home. A recipe and business that is now on their 3rd generation.

Another treat that many Dominicans come looking for in Puerto Plata. These vanilla cookies are a great companion for your tea or coffee, eat it with ice cream or enjoy it alone. Ask your taxi for their address, or write to me so that I can give it to you.

Dominican Desserts – Dulce De Leche

Dominican Desserts

One of the most characteristical dessert in Latin American countries. Each country has its twist to it. (I have tried some of them). Ours tends to be sweeter, and there are some ingredients that we add to improve its flavor: sweet potato, coconut, pineapple, orange.

But always having the Dulce de leche as the protagonist of it. You can buy most of these variations in any local supermarket or Dominican Things shops. Or try one of the most famous one in Puerto Plata: Doña Agustina, located near Central Park.

Dulce De Coco

Dominican Desserts

Coconut is ubiquitous in Dominican Republic cuisine. We use its oil, we drink its water, we add it to many savory dishes, but my favorite use is in desserts.

There are many different ways to present it: baked, with milk, with sweet potato, using the ripe coconut, using the green coconut, letting it to caramelize (Jalao) and way many more options that you can find in any local supermarket or Dominican Things shops. We also love the Coconut desserts made by another old traditional homemade recipe by Doña Agustina located close to Central Park.

Dulces En Almibar

Dominican Desserts

The sky is the limit in syrup desserts in the Dominican Republic: papaya, orange, guava, cherries, grapefruit, passion fruit, etc. Most of them are homemade, and you can find them in many restaurants, supermarkets or bakeries of town.

The good thing about them is that most of them come in a closed jar, and don’t need full-time refrigeration, so that you can take them home in your luggage.

Tres Leches

Dominican Desserts
You can also find some variations of this dessert around Latin America. It is a combination of a vanilla cake soaked in three kinds of milk mix: Hole Milk, Condense milk and evaporated milk, with some other surprise ingredients that enhance its flavor. It is a cold dessert. And you can find it in most of the restaurants and bakeries in town.

Flan De Leche / Coco

Dominican Desserts

This dessert is typical in all around the DR. Variation of Coconut, or only caramel (milk) are the most used. You can certainly find them in most of the restaurants and bakeries of town, certainly.

Dulce Frío

Dominican Desserts

Another great Dominican dessert, This is our favorite one. Usually a family Sunday lunch dessert. Its preparation includes biscuits, vanilla pudding, a hitch of rum, syrup fruit cocktail. You can find it in many supermarkets and bakeries of town.

Dulce De Leche Cortada Dominican Desserts

This dessert is another twist of Dulce de leche. But on this occasion, the milk gets “spoiled” and soured with lemon. It creates some crumbles, we also add cinnamon and raisins to it. You can find it in many restaurants, supermarkets, and bakeries of town.

Habichuelas Con Dulce

Dominican Desserts

This traditional Dominican dessert is mainly served at Easter time. Made from red kidney beans, milk, spices, raisins, and sweet potato, this is a most to try while visiting the Dominican Republic. In addition, some variations include coconut milk.

However, we usually add vanilla cookies or “Cazabe” (our traditional yucca bread) to it. You can drink it cold or hot. You can find it in many bakeries and supermarkets in town. And most of the restaurants have it on Easter season.

I hope you can enjoy or take home most of them! Which one was your favorite? Leave a comment below!
